A recent warning has been issued to Android users regarding the emergence of the BadBox malware, which has infected millions of devices. This malicious bug not only generates revenue for cybercriminals through intrusive adware but also poses a threat of ransomware, demanding payment to prevent the leakage of personal information.
Approximately 10 million devices, beyond just smartphones, such as tablets, projectors, and streaming boxes running on Android, are believed to have been impacted by BadBox 2.0. These inexpensive devices, often originating from China, are frequently preloaded with the malware.
In an effort to combat these attacks and safeguard consumers, Google has initiated legal action against the perpetrators behind the illicit distribution of these compromised devices. Google highlighted that the BadBox 2.0 botnet is the most extensive known botnet affecting internet-connected TV gadgets, with a continual expansion potential that could lead to more severe cybercrimes like ransomware and DDoS attacks.
The FBI has also chimed in, advising consumers to remain vigilant and disconnect any suspicious devices to mitigate potential risks. Notable infected devices include Android TV boxes with model numbers X88 Pro 10, T95, MXQ Pro, and QPLOVE Q9.
If you suspect owning a device purchased from an unofficial source, particularly the mentioned models, it is advisable to verify if it is Google Play Protect-certified. Additionally, it is wise to steer clear of off-brand electronics from unknown manufacturers to reduce vulnerability to BadBox 2.0.
It is crucial to exercise caution when downloading apps onto your device as the malware can be introduced post-installation. Stick to official software sources to minimize exposure to such threats.
