The police watchdog is launching an investigation into a serious identity mix-up following a tragic car crash in Rotherham. A 17-year-old girl driving a Toyota collided with a tree on December 13th, resulting in her and 18-year-old Joshua Johnson losing their lives. Another passenger, 17-year-old Trevor Wynn, sustained critical injuries. Shockingly, Joshua’s family spent weeks by Trevor’s side in the hospital, mistakenly believing he was their deceased loved one.
The error in identity was only discovered when Trevor regained consciousness and revealed his true identity to medical staff. This revelation came as a shock to Joshua’s family, who had been through an unimaginable ordeal during the holiday season. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated an investigation into the misidentification of the crash victims.
IOPC Director Emily Barry expressed condolences to all those affected by the distressing incident and emphasized the need for a thorough independent investigation to determine the cause of the mix-up. The families involved have been through a traumatic experience, and it is crucial to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic situation.
The families of the deceased have released heartfelt tributes, describing Joshua as a loving and caring individual. Jonathan Stoner, who had been organizing fundraising efforts for Trevor’s funeral, recounted how the mix-up was unveiled when Trevor regained consciousness and provided his personal details.
Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane acknowledged the shock caused by the mix-up and assured ongoing support for all the families involved. He emphasized the commitment to understanding the circumstances that led to the error and preventing such incidents in the future. The police have referred themselves to the IOPC and are cooperating fully with the investigation.
Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the crash, with one facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving and the other for perverting the course of justice. Both suspects are currently on bail pending further investigations.
