“Avalanche Alert: Storm Goretti Poses Risk to UK Hikers”

Date:

Hikers have been cautioned about the risk of avalanches on a popular mountain climb due to heavy snowfall in the country. An avalanche alert has been issued for Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, with concerns arising from unstable snow conditions leading to potential serious falls and localized avalanches. The alert was issued by the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team following the arrival of Storm Goretti.

In addition to Snowdon, six areas in Scotland are facing a “considerable” avalanche risk due to heavy snow and Arctic conditions. The Scottish Avalanche Information Service has identified risk areas including Creag Meagaidh, Glencoe, Lochaher, North Cairngorms, South Cairngorms, and Torridon.

The service warns of the possibility of natural avalanches, including large and very large ones in isolated cases. It also highlights the likelihood of triggering avalanches on steep slopes with a single person load.

Recent incidents on the A4086 Pen-y-Pass at Snowdon have raised concerns as visitors rushed to witness winter scenes, leading to chaotic situations. The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team has cautioned that many paths on Snowdon are buried under snow, with higher sections of the Llanberis Path considered particularly hazardous. The team also mentioned instability on upper sections of other popular routes like the Pyg Track.

The team emphasized the importance of experience, strong navigation skills, and understanding snow behavior for safe navigation in winter conditions. Suitable winter equipment such as crampons and ice axes are essential for such conditions.

A weather bomb is expected to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to the UK as Storm Goretti approaches. Weather warnings have been issued for snow, wind, rain, and ice across the country, anticipating potential disruption and hazardous travel conditions.

Neil Armstrong, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, highlighted the multi-hazard nature of Storm Goretti, with significant impacts expected from snow in Wales and the Midlands, as well as strong winds in the far South West. An amber warning has been issued for areas at the greatest risk of disruption, urging residents to stay informed and follow guidance from local authorities.

Storm Goretti is projected to undergo explosive cyclogenesis, known as a weather bomb, resulting in a rapid drop in central pressure. This phenomenon can lead to strong winds capable of causing damage to structures and trees.
