Greenland Minister Decries US Betrayal, Advocates Peace

Date:

A minister representing Greenland expressed the island’s sense of betrayal by the US while advocating for a peaceful resolution. Naaja Nathanielsen, the territory’s business minister, emphasized the need for discussions with allies regarding potential responses to a hypothetical invasion by Donald Trump. She voiced support for increased NATO presence on the island to mitigate perceived threats from Russia and China.

Nathanielsen highlighted the anxiety caused by Trump’s invasion threats and commended Britain and European allies for their steadfast support. Emphasizing the pursuit of a peaceful resolution, she stressed the importance of maintaining friendly relations and alliance unity rather than resorting to aggression.

In response to inquiries about NATO assistance in the event of an invasion, Nathanielsen noted the collective nature of any potential attack, suggesting a shared responsibility among NATO partners. She described the widespread unease among Greenland’s population, citing sleepless nights and fear among children due to the escalating tensions.

Recent statements from the US President regarding deploying troops to Greenland for national security reasons have fueled concerns. When asked about Trump’s motivations, Nathanielsen acknowledged the complexity of various narratives at play, including potential interests in Greenland’s natural resources.

Expressing deep concern over Trump’s rhetoric, Nathanielsen conveyed a sense of betrayal felt by the people of Greenland. She praised the solidarity shown by nations like the UK, France, and Germany in support of Greenland and Denmark amidst the US threats.

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland to discuss Trump’s expressed interest in acquiring the island. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reiterated the island’s non-negotiable stance on being sold or controlled by the US.

Trump’s assertion that acquiring Greenland is necessary to prevent Russia or China from doing so has sparked international attention and apprehension. The ongoing diplomatic discussions underscore the delicate balance of interests and alliances at play in the region.
