The death toll from recent anti-government demonstrations in Iran has risen once again, prompting United States President Donald Trump to halt discussions with Iranian officials due to the violent crackdown on protesters.
Beginning in December over economic hardships, protests in Iran quickly shifted focus towards challenging the longstanding Mullah regime that has maintained power since 1979.
Reports from international media outlets depict Tehran adorned with graffiti and echoing chants demanding the demise of 86-year-old supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Despite facing armed forces wielding firearms, demonstrators continue to gather, with footage showing body bags lined up at Tehran’s morgues.
According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, the death toll has surged to at least 2,571 as of Wednesday, January 14, with 2,403 identified as protesters and 147 as government supporters. Additionally, over 18,100 individuals have been detained in connection with the protests.
This death toll surpasses that of any previous unrest in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, with Skylar Thompson of the agency expressing shock over the figures, which are quadruple those of the 2022 Mahsa Amini demonstrations within just two weeks. Thompson cautioned that the numbers may increase further.
In a rare acknowledgment, Iranian state TV confirmed the deaths, citing an official who described the casualties as “martyrs.”
President Trump has voiced support for the protesters, urging them to persist in their actions. He declared the suspension of all engagements with Iranian authorities until the violence against protesters ceases, promising assistance.
Trump emphasized the need for accurate information on protester casualties before determining the appropriate response during a press briefing. He indicated that severe measures would be taken if Iran proceeds with executing protesters, with the first execution slated for the following day.
Erfan Soltani, a clothing store owner and father, is set to be the initial individual executed in response to the protests after being accused of participating in the anti-government demonstrations. Iranian officials have cautioned against US intervention, warning that any such actions could make the US a legitimate target.
The situation in Iran continues to escalate, with global attention focused on the unfolding events amidst mounting casualties and tensions between the Iranian government and the United States.
