Iran’s ambassador to the UK has been called to the Foreign Office concerning Tehran’s violent suppression of nationwide protests. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper addressed disturbing accounts of potentially thousands of casualties in the regime’s harshest crackdown in 13 years. With internet access limited in the country, Cooper expressed concerns that the reports might not capture the full extent of the tragedy.
In a separate development, US President Donald Trump encouraged demonstrators in Iran to persist in their protests. Trump, using his Truth Social platform, urged Iranian demonstrators to continue their actions and take control of their institutions. He also warned that those responsible for violence against protesters would face consequences, announcing the cancellation of all meetings with Iranian officials until the crackdown ceased.
The Foreign Office has summoned Iran’s ambassador to the UK, Seyed Ali Mousavi, for discussions regarding the country’s handling of the protests. Cooper, speaking in the House of Commons, conveyed the UK’s strong condemnation of the killings, violence, and repression witnessed in Iran. Plans for imposing additional sanctions on Iran, targeting various industries such as finance, energy, transport, and software, were also announced.
Cooper dismissed Iran’s claims that foreign forces were driving the domestic protests as falsehoods and propaganda. She emphasized that the current protests were a genuine grassroots movement involving people from diverse sectors of Iranian society and spanning several cities. Cooper reiterated the commitment of the UK and other governments worldwide to counter the Iranian regime’s misinformation and repression, safeguarding their respective interests.
