“Barnsley Tops England in School Holiday Fines”

Date:

The town in England with the highest number of students going on vacations during school term has been identified, coinciding with a surge in holiday penalties. Last year, a record-breaking 459,288 fines were issued for school holiday absences across England, marking a four percent increase from the previous year as confirmed by the Department for Education (DfE). These fines, accounting for 93 percent of all penalties for unauthorized school absences, have risen since 2024 to £80 per child, per parent, per holiday – up from the previous £60. While risking substantial penalties, families can save significant amounts by planning their vacations during term time, avoiding peak prices.

Failure to pay the school fine within 21 days can escalate to £160, and a second penalty within three years for the same child incurs an immediate £160 charge, according to the rules on Gov.uk. Barnsley emerged as the region with the highest number of fine notices per student in 2024/25, earning the title of England’s holiday fines hotspot. The local authority in Barnsley issued 5,275 fines to parents in the year for unauthorized family holidays, translating to 1,672 fines per 10,000 pupils.

In response to the spike in penalty notices nationwide, parents have voiced their opinions. Jodie Salt from Cheshire emphasized that her children derive more educational value from travel experiences than from the classroom setting. She expressed her preference for real-world learning opportunities over traditional educational methods. Another parent shared their experience of taking their children out of school for a holiday, highlighting the educational and cost-saving benefits of such trips.

Despite the positive views on term-time vacations, some argue that disrupting a child’s education by taking them out during school terms is not advisable. Various parents have expressed opposing views on the matter, criticizing the fines and suggesting alternative solutions. Cllr Ashley Peace from Barnsley emphasized the importance of improving attendance and discouraging term-time absences to prevent learning gaps.

Both parents and educators continue to debate the effectiveness and implications of school holiday fines, with differing perspectives on the impact of term-time vacations on children’s education.
