Father of Three Dies After 15-Hour Wait for Medical Help

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded just days before Christmas as a 28-year-old father of three, Dylan Jones, passed away following a 15-hour wait for medical attention. Jones, diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver, sought help after experiencing severe side pain at work on December 10. Despite calling emergency services, it took two hours for an ambulance to arrive.

Upon arrival at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary’s A&E department, Jones endured a grueling 13-hour wait on a trolley in a corridor for an MRI scan, during which his spleen ruptured. Rushed into surgery to address internal bleeding, Jones succumbed to his conditions on December 20.

While the official cause of death included liver failure, spleen rupture, and a preexisting genetic disorder called Jeune Syndrome, Jones’ family believes that the prolonged wait exacerbated his situation. His cousin, Billielea Porter, expressed that the delay in treatment severely impacted Jones’ chances of recovery.

In response to the tragedy, the family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and provide support for Jones’ children. The incident prompted Jackie Baillie, a Scottish Labour Health spokesperson, to denounce the circumstances surrounding Jones’ passing as a poignant reminder of the challenges facing the healthcare system.

Acknowledging the extended wait period at the hospital, Tracey Gillies, Medical Director of NHS Lothian, extended condolences to Jones’ family and emphasized the medical interventions undertaken during his ten-day stay in intensive care.

The Scottish Ambulance Service conveyed their deepest sympathies to the family while encouraging them to engage with the Patient Experience Team to address any concerns regarding the handling of the emergency call.

Cirrhosis of the liver, a severe liver condition affecting thousands in the UK, can lead to life-threatening complications if not promptly managed. Despite the potential for long-term survival with proper care, liver cirrhosis necessitates vigilant monitoring to prevent serious health risks.
