ICE agents in Minnesota have adopted a new ominous slogan in the aftermath of the tragic death of Renee Good in the city recently. Several videos have surfaced showing officers intimidating peaceful demonstrators to stop trailing them or yield to their instructions. Many of them are heard repeating phrases like “have you not learned?” in connection to an ICE officer fatally shooting a mother of three in Minneapolis last week.
The influx of anti-Migrant personnel into the state led by Donald Trump has escalated tensions, with Ms. Good being fatally shot by an ICE agent as she tried to maneuver her car around him. Despite clear video evidence indicating she posed no threat, Trump officials labeled her a “domestic terrorist” and defended the agent’s actions as self-defense.
Amid the controversy, five prosecutors, including First Assistant US Attorney Joe Thompson, resigned over the Justice Department’s handling of the incident. The Department of Homeland Security’s plan to deploy over 2,000 immigration officers to Minnesota prompted the state, along with Minneapolis and St. Paul, to file a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration to halt or restrict the surge.
The lawsuit alleges that Homeland Security’s actions violate constitutional rights by targeting a liberal state that leans towards Democrats and embraces immigrants. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed concerns about the impact of the federal agents on daily life in the city. Homeland Security, however, asserts its commitment to continue making arrests in the state and accuses Minnesota officials of disregarding public safety.
As tensions escalate, ICE agents deployed tear gas and eye irritants against activists in ongoing clashes, while students staged a walkout at a suburban school to protest the immigration raids. The situation remains contentious, with a scheduled status conference set for Wednesday to address the legal dispute.
