BT has released a crucial update regarding landline services, indicating a significant shift for households utilizing this technology. The traditional copper cables that have facilitated communication for over a century are now facing decommissioning, with less than a year remaining until the transition is complete on January 31, 2027.
The move towards digital services relying on internet connectivity for calls is imperative, as highlighted by companies like BT, citing the outdated copper system’s inefficiency and inability to meet contemporary connectivity demands.
BT’s latest innovation, Digital Voice, promises enhanced connectivity, clearer audio quality, call forwarding capabilities to mobile devices, and improved call screening features to combat scams and unwanted solicitations. While over three million UK households have already made the switch to Digital Voice, many more are yet to transition.
In a recent announcement to Mirror Online, BT emphasized the urgency for customers to act promptly, underscoring the availability of support during the transition period to prevent disruptions in phone and broadband services.
As the era of copper wires draws to a close, it is essential for individuals to ensure their landline setups are prepared for the upcoming change. Transitioning to digital services is straightforward, with most existing BT handsets compatible with digital landlines. Retaining the same phone number and billing structure, the process often involves connecting the home phone to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket. In cases where this proves challenging, contacting the provider or scheduling an engineer visit may be necessary.
BT also advises customers with special requirements, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to notify their provider promptly for tailored support arrangements.
To verify the status of their transition, individuals are encouraged to confirm their readiness before the copper network is phased out.
