Since its debut in 1977, the Crucible has been a magnet for snooker fans worldwide every spring. The championship will continue at its current setup for the next three editions before undergoing refurbishments post the 2028 tournament. During the renovation phase, the event will temporarily shift to another location before returning to the revamped theatre.
The deal guarantees the championship’s residence at the Crucible until 2045, with an optional extension to 2050. Barry Hearn, a key figure in snooker management, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, highlighting the venue’s significance to him. Prime Minister Kier Starmer’s involvement in negotiations also played a crucial role in securing the long-term future of the tournament at the Crucible.
Stephen Hendry, a renowned snooker personality and BBC commentator, emphasized the unique ambiance and historical value of the Crucible, expressing his joy at the extended tenure at this iconic venue. The 2022 World Snooker Championship is set to commence on April 18, with the finale scheduled for May 4, offering a grand prize of £500,000. Reigning champion Zhao Xintong from China and Ronnie O’Sullivan, aiming for an eighth title, are among the anticipated contenders for this prestigious event.
