A beloved weather forecast expert tragically lost his life when his aircraft collided with a power line and crashed into a frigid river.
Roland Steadham, a seasoned meteorologist aged 67, was one of two individuals who perished in the recent accident. Flight data revealed that communication with the plane was lost at 10:55 am local time, approximately 12 minutes after departing from Emmett Airport in Idaho.
The wreckage of the aircraft was later discovered in the nearby Payette River, leading authorities to suspect that the plane struck an object. The Gem County Sheriff’s Office disclosed, “Initial findings suggest that a small aircraft made contact with a power line before crashing onto the icy river.”
Both male occupants on board suffered fatal injuries in the incident. Emergency response teams, including deputies and fire and EMS personnel from Gem County, swiftly responded to the crash site and are currently present.
Rescuers quickly mobilized to the scene in a boat as temperatures in Idaho and surrounding areas plummeted. The identity of the second individual involved in the crash remains undisclosed.
Details regarding the aircraft model are yet to be released, although records indicate it was registered under Northwest Registered Agent LLC. Further specifics about the crash itself have not been made public.
Steadham, described as a highly regarded pilot, regularly flew small planes from Emmett, as reported by CBS2. It is uncertain whether he was operating the aircraft at the time of the tragedy.
With over 3,000 flight hours logged, Steadham recently visited an aviation class at Payette River Regional Technical Academy in Emmett. According to teacher Jim Baker, Steadham encouraged students to pursue aviation, expressing his passion for flying before departing the class shortly before the accident.
The plane crash resulted in a local power outage, and Idaho Power is collaborating with emergency responders to restore the power lines once the area is secure. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
This incident follows a separate tragedy where a private jet crashed during takeoff at Maine’s Bangor International Airport, resulting in the death of all individuals on board. Among the victims were a corporate pilot associated with a Texas law firm connected to the plane and an event planner who had previously collaborated with the firm.
Lakewood Church in Houston confirmed the loss of Shawna Collins, a dedicated employee, in the crash. Collins, known for organizing events globally, had worked closely with Arnold and Itkin Trial Lawyers, the Houston law firm linked to the aircraft.
Donald Iloff Jr., a church spokesperson, fondly remembered Collins, highlighting her vibrant personality and the impact she had on those around her.
