“UK Travelers Banned from Cuba Amid Crisis”

Date:

A recent advisory from the Foreign Office has prohibited all UK travelers from visiting a popular Caribbean destination due to significant challenges faced by the island.

The Foreign Office has cautioned against non-essential travel to Cuba because of widespread power outages and fuel shortages affecting the country. Consequently, flights have been severely disrupted, leading to numerous cancellations as Cuba grapples with ensuring reliable transportation.

Despite its appeal with its warm climate and sandy beaches, Cuba has been inaccessible to British travelers due to the ongoing fuel crisis, effectively prohibiting travel from the UK.

In a statement released on Wednesday, 11 February, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office highlighted that Cuba is encountering severe disruptions to vital infrastructure, persistent countrywide power failures, and fuel scarcity. These conditions have significantly impacted visitors’ access to reliable transportation, medical services, communication, and basic amenities.

The FCDO further mentioned that fuel rationing, reduced public services, and temporary adjustments in healthcare, education, transport, and tourism operations have been implemented to conserve limited energy supplies.

Furthermore, flight operations have been disrupted due to shortages in aviation fuel, prompting some airlines to reconsider routes or suspend services temporarily, posing a risk of visitors being stranded in the country.

For individuals currently in Cuba, the FCDO advised assessing the necessity of their presence and recommended taking precautions by conserving fuel, water, food, and mobile phone charge. They also suggested being prepared for significant disruptions and contacting relevant airlines and tour operators.

Air Canada recently confirmed the suspension of all flights to Cuba to facilitate the evacuation of approximately 3,000 holidaymakers from the island. Additionally, Canadian airlines such as Air Transat and Westjet have also halted their flights to Cuba.

While there are no direct flights between the UK and Cuba, several specialist tour operators offering the destination through airlines routing via third countries, like the UK-based Trailfinders, will be impacted by the ban. Other affected operators include Simply Cuba, Love Cuba, Cox & Kings, Exodus, and Intrepid Travel.

The disruption in travel is a direct result of the seizure of Venezuelan oil tankers by the administration of President Donald Trump, as Cuba heavily relies on Venezuela for fuel, which has been scarce since the US blockade in December.

As per a Notice to Aviation (NOTAM), commercial availability of aviation fuel at Cuban airports is not expected until at least March 11, 2026. The Caribbean nation continues to face power outages amid the fuel and electricity shortages.
