Donald Trump’s administration faces accusations of pressuring the British government to abandon its plans to prohibit the import of trophies from hunting. Doug Bergum, Trump’s Interior Secretary, has written to Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds, suggesting a reconsideration of the ban, citing potential negative impacts on local economies, conservation initiatives, and cultural sensitivities in the United States.
Trump, whose sons Donald Jr and Eric engage in trophy hunting, previously overturned a ban on trophy imports introduced during the Obama administration. Key hunting advocacy groups, such as the Safari Club International and Dallas Safari Club, supported Trump’s reelection efforts.
The Mirror has advocated for a ban on trophy hunting imports, a stance also included in the Labour Government’s manifesto. Despite delays, Defra minister Mary Creagh confirmed the government’s dedication to the ban late last year. However, legislative attempts to enact trophy hunting bans have faced obstacles in Parliament, with one bill obstructed by pro-hunting peers in the House of Lords.
Eduardo Goncalves, founder of The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting, criticized the Trump administration’s interference in the UK’s decision-making process regarding the ban. He emphasized the overwhelming public and parliamentary support for the ban and urged the government to uphold its commitment to implement the ban this year.
In his letter, Mr. Burgum expressed concerns that the proposed ban could undermine conservation efforts both in the U.S. and globally. He highlighted the positive impact of legal and well-regulated hunting, particularly trophy hunting, in maintaining healthy wildlife populations, preserving habitats, and supporting local economies. He encouraged the United Kingdom to engage in dialogue through established channels rather than pursuing a blanket ban on all imports.
