“Survivor’s Story: Abducted at 13, Now a Champion for Child Safety”

Date:

At the age of 13, a young girl left her home to meet a person she thought was a trusted friend, only to unknowingly walk into one of the most disturbing cases of child abduction in internet history.

During the early 2000s, in a time when online spaces were largely unregulated, Alicia Kozakiewicz connected with an individual on the internet who claimed to be her peer but turned out to be 31 years old. This person then introduced Alicia to another individual.

After forming a strong bond through months of daily conversations, shared interests, and emotional ties, Alicia and her new online companion decided to meet in person.

On New Year’s Day in 2002, Alicia pretended to be unwell and went to her room to rest. Instead, she left to meet her online friend, who turned out to be the person who eventually kidnapped her.

In a firsthand account for the BBC, Alicia disclosed, “He was the person I went to meet on New Year’s Day and who abducted me in his vehicle.” Immediately after meeting, the situation escalated into violence, with Alicia recalling the terrifying experience of being physically restrained and threatened.

During the journey away from her hometown, Alicia hoped for a quick stop but realized the severity of the situation as they passed through a toll booth. The fear of her uncertain fate intensified as she found herself in a strange place, Virginia, where she was taken into a basement.

Subjected to unimaginable horrors, Alicia was sexually abused, chained, and physically assaulted for days. Despite the ordeal, she maintained a hopeful outlook, longing for rescue and clinging to the possibility of survival.

Following a distressing encounter with her captor, Alicia found herself facing a life-threatening situation until law enforcement intervention saved her. The FBI’s timely actions led to her liberation from captivity.

Alicia’s traumatic experience led to the arrest and conviction of the kidnapper, who received a lengthy prison sentence for his crimes. Despite the perpetrator’s release, Alicia has dedicated herself to advocating for child safety, raising awareness about online risks, and supporting initiatives to protect vulnerable children.

Today, Alicia continues her efforts to prevent similar tragedies, emphasizing the critical importance of swift action in cases of missing children. Her resilience and advocacy work have made a significant impact in promoting online safety and safeguarding children from harm.
