Swiss Pub Owner Arrested in Deadly Fire Case

Date:

The proprietor of a Swiss pub where numerous individuals perished in a fire on New Year’s Eve has been apprehended. Jacques Moretti, the operator of Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, where 40 individuals lost their lives in a tragic blaze, has been taken into custody pursuant to an order from Swiss authorities. Moretti, aged 49, who had been free since the devastating incident eight days ago, is now considered a flight risk by Swiss prosecutors before a potential trial on various charges. His wife, Jessica Moretti, aged 40, is also under investigation. The couple, both French nationals, face accusations of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence. They were summoned for interrogation following the fire that claimed the lives of 40 people, predominantly teenagers, and injured 116 others. Prosecutors spent Friday questioning the Morettis privately about the fire at their bar in Crans-Montana on January 1st. The couple arrived at the prosecutor’s office in Sion, the capital of Valais, accompanied by police, and declined to provide comments as they entered the premises early in the morning. The blaze, considered one of Switzerland’s worst, resulted in tributes to the victims. Investigations suggest that the fire may have been initiated by candle sparklers held too close to the ceiling. Authorities are also examining whether the ceiling material, designed for sound insulation, complied with regulations. Following the hearing, Mr. Moretti was remanded in custody, while his wife was allowed to remain free. He is being held to prevent any attempt to flee Switzerland. The deceased individuals were aged between 14 and 39, including Charlotte Niddam, who was educated in Britain. Lawyers representing the fire victims requested that the Morettis be placed in pre-trial detention. Sébastien Fanti, legal counsel for the hospitalized survivors, described Mr. Moretti as a questionable individual with questionable practices. The fire is believed to have been triggered by sparklers igniting highly flammable acoustic foam, leading to a ‘flashover’ fire. Families of the victims have lodged legal complaints with Switzerland’s prosecutor’s office, with each family joining the proceedings as plaintiffs. Authorities are investigating renovations conducted in 2015 amid claims of inadequate safety measures. They will also scrutinize the utilization of fire extinguishers and fire exits. A local newspaper reported that Mr. Moretti claimed the bar had undergone inspections three times in a decade and that all procedures were conducted within the appropriate standards. The Morettis operate two other establishments, one in Crans-Montana and another in the nearby Lens area.
