A member of the Danish Parliament has raised concerns about the potential consequences if the United States were to proceed with a military invasion of Greenland. This apprehension comes amid escalating worries of an assertive American agenda under the leadership of President Donald Trump. Rasmus Jarlov issued this stark warning in response to Trump’s repeated assertions of wanting to incorporate Greenland, a Danish territory, into the United States, citing its strategic significance for national security.
Currently, the US is allowed to station troops in Greenland and benefits from advantageous agreements for resource extraction. Nevertheless, the American military presence in Greenland has diminished since the conclusion of the Cold War. Despite this, Trump’s rhetoric towards Denmark, a NATO ally that supported the US in conflicts such as Afghanistan, has taken on an imperialistic tone. Jarlov cautioned that any European nation possessing territories in the Americas, like the UK, could potentially face repercussions from Trump if he were to act on his invasion threats.
Jarlov emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting that even countries with a history of loyalty and cooperation with the US, such as Denmark and Greenland, could be targeted. This unpredictability raises concerns about the stability of the Western world and the potential ramifications of American aggression on various nations. The Danish MP stressed the need for vigilance and unity in the face of such uncertain developments.
In a separate incident, following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, President Trump heralded a new era akin to the “Monroe Doctrine” of the 1800s, asserting American dominance in the Western Hemisphere. This declaration underscored Trump’s vision of unassailable US influence in the region.
Regarding the hypothetical scenario of a US invasion of Greenland, Jarlov expressed disbelief in its likelihood, speculating that the US might attempt to sway public sentiment through economic incentives instead. Nonetheless, he asserted that any form of coercion would be unacceptable and rejected the notion of manipulating Greenlanders as a bargaining tool.
A recent poll conducted in January 2025 by Verian revealed that only a small percentage of Greenlanders favored seceding from Denmark to join the US, with the majority expressing a desire to remain independent. This survey indicated strong opposition among Greenlanders to becoming part of the United States, with a minimal fraction undecided on the matter.
