A man in Pennsylvania, identified as Jonathan Gerlach, has been arrested and charged with stealing over 100 skulls following a disturbing discovery inside a residence. The 34-year-old suspect faces more than 500 charges for allegedly desecrating gravesites and mausoleums at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon, near Philadelphia, where numerous bones, mummified body parts, and decomposed skeletons were found.
Authorities revealed that the remains were found in Gerlach’s basement and a separate storage unit. District Attorney Tanner Rouse described the gruesome scene as resembling a “horror movie come to life,” with bones in various conditions, including some hanging and others pieced together.
Gerlach is believed to have targeted the 160-acre cemetery, where approximately 150,000 individuals have been laid to rest. The motives behind his actions remain unclear, especially concerning the preservation of remains that may date back centuries.
Among the recovered remains were those of children, some just a few months old at the time of death, as confirmed by the County District Attorney. Rouse mentioned the ongoing effort to identify the individuals, determine their origins, and assess the total number of recovered bones.
The investigation unfolded after a series of break-ins at the cemetery, culminating in Gerlach’s arrest as he was seen leaving the site with a crowbar. Charges against him include theft, receiving stolen property, and abuse of a corpse, along with offenses related to desecrating burial grounds and monuments.
Authorities also disclosed the discovery of jewelry connected to the cemetery and noted the presence of a pacemaker in one of the recovered bodies. Rouse expressed sympathy for those affected by the situation, particularly families grappling with the possibility that their loved ones’ remains were among those collected by Gerlach.
The case, which began around Halloween with the detection of multiple forced-open mausoleums and vaults at the cemetery, underscores the seriousness of the alleged crimes committed by Gerlach. The legal proceedings are ongoing as court records show him facing a range of charges related to the disturbing incident.
