Geoff Burrow, the father of the renowned rugby league player Rob Burrow, has sadly passed away, as confirmed recently. Geoff played a crucial role in the notable awareness and fundraising campaign initiated after Rob’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease.
Leeds Rhinos conveyed in a statement their profound sorrow at the news of Geoff Burrow’s demise on the 30th of March following a period of poor health. Geoff, a native of Leeds, tirelessly advocated for the MND community after Rob’s diagnosis in December 2019 and continued this effort after Rob’s passing in June 2024.
Known as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff introduced Rob to his first game at Headingley, igniting his passion for the Rhinos. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff consistently championed the voiceless.
The club extended their sincerest condolences to Geoff’s wife Irene and the Burrow family during this somber period, urging respect for the family’s privacy. Leeds legend Rob Burrow, diagnosed with MND in late 2019 and passing away in June 2024, tirelessly advocated until the end, supported by family and former teammate Kevin Sinfield.
Their efforts led to the establishment of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. The center, costing £6.8 million, opened in November 2025 following groundbreaking shortly after Rob’s death in June 2024.
Expressing gratitude to all who contributed, Geoff emphasized the importance of the fundraising not only for MND patients and families but for the dedicated staff. He played a vital role in caring for Rob and their children to enable Rob’s wife Lindsey to continue her work as an NHS physiotherapist.
Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, and St Helens all offered their condolences and support to the Burrow family during this challenging time.
