Co-op is set to implement innovative “flexi checkouts” in its stores to reduce waiting times for customers. These smart tills can seamlessly switch between self-service and cashier-operated modes based on customer preferences, aiming to enhance convenience and efficiency. Supplied by American financial and retail tech company Diebold Nixdorf, these checkouts will be deployed in 150 Co-op stores by April.
In addition to the flexibility of mode selection, the checkout screens will display price discounts, promotions, and potential future services like parcel collections. Co-op touts itself as the first UK supermarket to adopt this cutting-edge technology.
David Tyas, Co-op’s head of operations, support center, and innovation, emphasized the brand’s commitment to creating local stores that cater to community needs and offer enjoyable shopping experiences. He highlighted the significance of providing options for both personalized interactions with staff and speedy transactions.
Furthermore, Co-op recently announced the opening of 18 new or revamped stores in the first quarter of 2026. The inaugural store of the year is located in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire, reflecting the brand’s dedication to expanding its presence in various neighborhoods.
Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, underscored the brand’s focus on delivering quality products, value, and engaging promotions that resonate with members and customers. She expressed enthusiasm for the 2026 store expansion initiative, emphasizing Co-op’s goal of becoming a vital hub in local communities nationwide.
Moreover, Co-op unveiled plans to introduce thousands of new apprenticeships in the coming years. With a £70 million investment through its Levy Share service, the retail giant aims to establish 7,000 apprenticeships by 2030, demonstrating its commitment to nurturing talent and supporting workforce development.
These strategic moves align with Co-op’s overarching mission to provide exceptional service, foster community relationships, and remain at the forefront of innovation in the retail sector.
