Joanna Lumley Slams Trump Admin Over Trophy Hunting Pressure

Date:

Joanna Lumley strongly criticized the Trump administration for pressuring the UK to lift a ban on importing trophies from hunting. The renowned actress, known for her activism, along with actor Peter Egan, expressed their disapproval after Doug Bergum, Trump’s Interior Secretary, urged the UK’s Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds to reconsider the ban, citing potential negative impacts on hunting tourism, conservation efforts, and cultural sensitivities in the US.

President Trump, whose sons Donald Jr. and Eric are avid hunters, had previously overturned a ban on trophy imports put in place during Barack Obama’s administration. The Mirror has consistently advocated for a ban on trophy hunting imports, a policy supported by the Labour Government in its manifesto, though legislative delays have hindered its implementation.

Dame Joanna Lumley emphasized the need for the UK government to uphold the ban, stating that trophy hunting has no place in a modern society. Peter Egan echoed her sentiments, labeling trophy hunting as a brutal reminder of colonialism. The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting founder, Eduardo Goncalves, condemned the Trump administration’s interference, emphasizing the overwhelming support for the ban among the British public and political parties.

Despite pressure from the US, the UK government reaffirmed its commitment to banning trophy hunting imports. Baroness Hayman, responsible for the ban’s development, engaged with US embassy representatives regarding the matter. The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting further highlighted the unethical nature of trophy hunting and urged the UK government to stand firm against external influences.

In a letter to the UK, Mr. Burgum argued that regulated trophy hunting is essential for wildlife conservation and community welfare. He encouraged the UK to engage in dialogue rather than impose a blanket ban on imports, emphasizing the benefits of legal hunting practices.

Overall, the UK faces external pressure to reconsider its ban on trophy hunting imports, but advocates and lawmakers are standing firm in upholding the ban in alignment with the wishes of the British public and the principles of conservation.
