TUI has introduced a fresh city break destination for spring, located in an increasingly popular part of Spain that offers a distinctive atmosphere.
For those seeking a change from the crowded Spanish Costas, Northern Spain has emerged as an appealing alternative, especially for British travelers looking to explore a different side of the country. The Basque Country experienced a significant 40% surge in visitors last year, though it still receives far fewer tourists compared to Southern Spain.
At the core of the Basque Country lies Bilbao, a fantastic starting point for discovering the region’s unique charm and heritage if you haven’t had the chance to visit this part of Spain before.
TUI will be providing city breaks to Bilbao from four major UK airports this spring: Bristol, London-Gatwick, London-Heathrow, and Manchester. With flights under two hours from London, it’s perfect for a quick getaway or a long weekend.
The region’s climate and landscapes diverge from the arid, sunny south, offering milder temperatures that serve as a refreshing escape from summer heatwaves. In March and April, daily highs average around 17°C, while summer temperatures reach about 26°C, a contrast to the mid-30s commonly experienced in the south. Moreover, Northern Spain receives more rainfall, resulting in lush green surroundings.
Bilbao, situated along the Nervión River, boasts the charming old town, Casco Viejo, featuring vibrant medieval buildings, a splendid cathedral, and the elegant neoclassical Plaza Nueva teeming with bars and eateries, making it an ideal city break destination.
In a feature by Lonely Planet, a travel writer described the striking natural beauty of Bilbao, stating that the lush forests viewed during the descent to Bilbao Airport offer a different perspective of Spain.
In addition to its cultural allure, Bilbao is renowned for its diverse food scene, with numerous pintxos bars lining the streets. Pintxos, a northern equivalent to tapas, consist of bite-sized bread topped with an array of ingredients like jamón, seafood, or cheese, secured with a cocktail stick.
Northern Spain is also famous for its Rioja wines, an excellent complement to pintxos. Visitors can opt for day trips to wineries near the city or indulge in wine tastings at local bars.
