An elderly couple, Tony and Phyllis Gilbert, aged 83, were tragically found dead in their residence in Dromneavane, Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland. Their daughter-in-law, Beryl Gilbert, who usually assisted them with shopping, arrived at their bungalow on the morning of November 14, 2021, to deliver groceries. However, she was alarmed to discover a chilling note attached to the door, stating, “All going to plan we should be dead.”
The note instructed Beryl to notify the authorities and disclosed the location of a front door key hidden in a flower pot for entry. Upon police intervention, the elderly couple was found lifeless in a bedroom, each in separate beds, without any signs of physical harm. It was revealed that the couple had taken their own lives, with Mrs. Gilbert battling stage four pancreatic cancer.
Post-mortem examinations conducted by Chief State Pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan confirmed that the couple had ingested a lethal substance. Toxicology results further substantiated the cause of death. Dr. Mulligan emphasized that Mrs. Gilbert’s advanced cancer condition and the couple’s preparedness indicated a voluntary decision.
The coroner pronounced a suicide verdict for both individuals, expressing condolences to their families. The couple, known for their reclusive nature, had shown no signs of external influence. Mr. Gilbert’s artistic talents were remembered by locals, who described the couple as quiet and humble.
In a distressing conclusion, the coroner highlighted the need for emotional support and provided contact information for the Samaritans helpline.
