The duration of awards for individuals applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be extended starting in April to alleviate the backlog. PIP serves as the primary disability benefit for working-age individuals in the UK, providing support for those requiring assistance with daily activities due to health issues or disabilities. Eligibility for PIP is determined by the impact of the condition on one’s life rather than the condition itself. Currently, PIP awards can be as brief as nine months, but upcoming changes effective from April 2026 will extend the minimum award period to three years for most new claimants aged 25 and above, with the possibility of further extension to five years upon review.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) announced that this initiative aims to streamline the assessment process, enabling healthcare professionals to conduct more in-person assessments and reassessments. These operational adjustments are distinct from the ongoing Timms Review, which focuses on PIP’s role, eligibility criteria for daily living and mobility components, and the assessment procedures.
PIP consists of two components: the daily living component and the mobility component, with varying weekly rates based on the awarded level. Recipients of the standard daily living rate receive £73.90 per week, while those on the higher rate receive £110.40 weekly. The standard mobility rate is £29.20 per week, with the higher rate set at £77.05 per week. It is important to inform the DWP of any changes in health or condition.
Individuals with terminal illnesses typically receive PIP automatically without assessment. Under the special rules for terminal illness, the award period is three years before undergoing review. PIP is accessible for those aged 16 and above but below state pension age, with claims generally continuing upon reaching state pension age. If eligible, a new claim may be made at state pension age within 12 months of previous PIP eligibility.
