Aldi Named Most Economical Supermarket by Which?

Date:

Aldi has been recognized once again as the most economical supermarket of the month, as per the latest price analysis by Which?. In February, Which? compared prices of 89 items and found that the average cost at Aldi was £161.56 for the month. Lidl followed closely behind, with its shopping list costing just £1.19 more at £162.75. Asda secured the third spot at £181.06, with Tesco trailing slightly at £181.58 with a Clubcard.

The list of items included a mix of branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter. Waitrose emerged as the priciest option this month for a smaller list of items, averaging at £217.02, a notable difference of £55.46 compared to Aldi.

For a larger list of 225 items, Tesco was deemed the most cost-effective for Clubcard members, with the total coming to £580.35, making it cheaper than Asda by £3.97. Without a Clubcard, the same shop at Tesco tallied up to £629.25, £48.90 more expensive. The comparison excluded Aldi and Lidl due to their smaller product ranges.

Waitrose also stood out as the costliest on average, with the larger shop totaling £650.11, setting it apart by £69.76 compared to Tesco with a Clubcard. The analysis factored in special offer prices and loyalty prices, excluding multibuys.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, noted, “Aldi clinched the top position this month, but the competitive rivalry between discounters means Lidl remains a superb choice for cutting grocery expenses. Tesco’s Clubcard provides great value for branded product enthusiasts, but these savings should be more widely accessible, a move anticipated later this year.”

“In these financially challenging times, our study emphasizes that strategic shopping decisions can save consumers hundreds of pounds annually.”
