“UK Mandates Energy Suppliers to Fix Smart Meters in 90 Days”

Date:

Energy suppliers will be mandated to rectify malfunctioning smart meters within a maximum of 90 days under upcoming regulations. Many households have faced issues with their smart meters failing to transmit meter readings automatically to suppliers. Failure by energy companies to fix non-operational smart meters within the specified 90-day period may result in penalties or legal repercussions from the regulatory body, Ofgem.

These new rules are set to be enforced starting early May, following recent changes that now entitle households to receive £40 in compensation if they encounter problems during smart meter installations. For instance, households are eligible for compensation if they experience delays of more than six weeks for a smart meter appointment.

Compensation will also be applicable if an installation appointment fails due to a supplier-controlled fault or if a supplier does not provide a resolution plan for a reported issue within five working days. Smart meters are currently utilized by nearly 40 million households and small businesses across the UK.

By 2033, energy suppliers will be obligated to replace all smart meters still operating on 2G and 3G networks before the services are discontinued. Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey emphasized the importance of timely smart meter repairs to enhance standards, protect consumers, and ensure more individuals benefit from smart meter technology.

Victoria Bacon, Director of Communications at Smart Energy GB, highlighted the positive strides made in improving the smart meter user experience, with a significant majority now functioning in smart mode and high satisfaction rates among users. The implementation of these new rules aims to instill confidence in households, promote further smart meter installations, and empower consumers with greater control over energy usage and access to cost-saving tariffs.
