Reform UK and the Conservative Party are being criticized by Sadiq Khan for their disapproval of what London stands for. The Mayor of London accused both parties of opposing the city’s diversity, progressiveness, and prosperity, as well as having a Muslim Mayor. During a speech at the Fabian Society’s annual conference, Khan urged his Labour colleagues to join him in promoting the benefits of immigration.
Khan expressed concern about the rise of far-right populism and nativism, highlighting that the concept of a diverse, united, and prosperous society is facing unprecedented threats. He cited the White House’s ‘National Security Strategy’ claiming that Europe is in danger of ‘civilisational erasure.’
In defense of London, Khan argued that critics of the city are envious of its success, as it contradicts their worldview. He criticized their tactics of spreading lies, creating enemies, inciting fear, and blaming immigrants for societal problems, labeling such rhetoric as cruel and dangerous.
Emphasizing the positive impact of immigration, Khan stressed that generations of migrants, including refugees, have contributed to the vibrant and culturally rich city of London. He highlighted how immigration has enriched various aspects of life in the city, from food and clothing to art and music.
Khan also underscored the importance of advocating for the positive aspects of immigration without fear, emphasizing that diversity has been instrumental in shaping London into the extraordinary city it is today.
