A defense expert has criticized Donald Trump’s controversial idea to potentially seize Greenland, highlighting a significant flaw in his strategy.
In a recent outburst on his Truth social platform, the US president targeted NATO allies, specifically calling out Keir Starmer over the Chagos Islands deal and for allegedly disclosing a private communication from French President Emmanuel Macron.
Despite mounting tensions, Trump reiterated his stance on Greenland, asserting before departing for Davos that the US would need to possess the Danish territory.
His argument for acquiring Greenland as a strategic move to counter potential future threats from Russia and China through newly navigable sea routes relies on the same climate change science that his administration has consistently denied.
Professor Anthony Glees from the University of Buckingham emphasized the emerging strategic significance of the thawing Arctic due to global warming, a concept that Trump disputes.
Glees cautioned that any US move to seize Greenland would jeopardize the NATO alliance, and even if Denmark were to agree to a sale, it could still lead to the alliance’s demise.
He further warned that Trump’s acquisition of Greenland could spell disaster for NATO, emphasizing the historical strength derived from the alliance, which played a crucial role in defeating communism.
Recently, the defense expert highlighted the importance of maintaining British military independence amid the Greenland crisis, emphasizing that the UK retains control over its Trident nuclear deterrent, despite reliance on US support for maintenance.
He stressed that the UK should not underestimate its military capabilities and should not overly rely on external assistance, asserting that the country stands strong on its own.
