A woman has confessed to the killing of her four-year-old son, wrapping his body in a shower curtain and abandoning it near a shopping center. Keara Cotton, aged 31, has been given a 25-year prison sentence after admitting to murder and hiding the death of her son, Jayceion Mathis, who passed away in Cordele, Georgia, in 2021.
The case came to light when family members reported Jayceion missing after several months. Concerned relatives contacted the Vienna Police Department on January 20, 2022, prompting an investigation. Although initially unreachable, Cotton was located four days later and taken into custody.
Subsequently, authorities discovered the remains of a child a few miles away. District Attorney Brad Rigby revealed that the body had been wrapped in a shopping bag and a shower curtain before being disposed of.
Rigby expressed sorrow that what should have been Jayceion’s ninth birthday turned into a day of justice for his untimely death. Following Jayceion’s passing in November 2021, Cotton allegedly did not seek medical assistance when he failed to wake up one morning. Instead, she preserved his body at her residence.
After promising family members in January 2022 that she would bring Jayceion to visit, Cotton failed to appear, leading to her arrest. Investigations revealed that she had attempted to evade law enforcement by traveling to different locations across Georgia.
Reports indicated that prior to Jayceion’s death, the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services had investigated allegations of neglect against Cotton, involving both Jayceion and his older sister. Despite the deteriorated condition of Jayceion’s body hindering a specific cause of death determination, Cotton ultimately confessed to the crimes and now faces a 25-year prison term.
