“Matt Goodwin Named Reform UK Contender for Gorton and Denton By-Election”

Date:

Reform UK has named Matt Goodwin as its contender for the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election. Goodwin, a right-wing activist and GB News commentator, has previously faced criticism for his involvement in a racism controversy.

In a report by Hope Not Hate, it was highlighted that Goodwin, a former academic turned activist, has been increasingly instrumental in supporting Reform. With a Substack following of over 70,000, he has been recognized for his expertise in understanding the success factors of far-right parties and their supporters, positioning him as a notable figure in the radical-right sphere in the UK.

Addressing questions about the by-election, Goodwin expressed his views on the Labour Party and emphasized the importance of addressing concerns related to the government’s actions. He also touched on the issue of Islamophobia, stating that it has gained prominence among the elite class.

Describing himself as not a career politician or part of the establishment, Goodwin distanced himself from traditional political affiliations. He emphasized his outsider status during a press conference where he was announced as Reform’s candidate for the upcoming election.

In a separate incident, Lee Anderson, an ex-Tory MP, made critical remarks about Keir Starmer, accusing him of evading parliamentary questions by traveling to China. Anderson, who has aligned himself with Reform, boasted about his election victory and projected confidence in Reform’s potential to increase its presence in Parliament through the upcoming by-election.

The Gorton by-election was prompted by the resignation of independent MP Andrew Gwynne due to health reasons. Gwynne, who previously represented Labour, faced challenges within the party, leading to his suspension. With the election scheduled for February 26, the contest is expected to be closely watched due to the presence of Reform and the Greens as significant contenders alongside Labour.
