An acclaimed UK village renowned as the most picturesque globally has taken significant steps to address the challenges of excessive tourism, receiving substantial financial support and exploring various new potential solutions.
Nestled in the scenic Gloucestershire Cotswolds, Bibury exudes undeniable charm with its honey-colored stone cottages, meandering river, and enchanting historical ambiance. Its irresistible appeal led Forbes to declare it the world’s top village in 2025, a century and a half after poet William Morris hailed Bibury as “the most beautiful village in England.”
Arlington Row’s cottages are often praised as the most photographed and stunning in Britain. Originally constructed in 1380 as a wool store for monks, the buildings were later transformed into weavers’ residences during the 17th century.
Bibury’s popularity, with appealing accommodations like the Swan Hotel and The Catherine Wheel pub adorned with climbing plants, has firmly established it as a must-visit destination for tourists. However, some locals argue that the situation is spiraling out of control.

Mark Honeyball, chairman of the local parking action group and a Bibury resident for a decade, recounted unsettling encounters with visitors. He disclosed to the Express an incident where he confronted a coach driver parked on double yellow lines, leading to a physical altercation.
Honeyball stated, “I’ve experienced four physical attacks, with one particularly severe incident two weeks ago where I was assaulted by a driver I asked to move from double yellow lines. Coach drivers are pressured by their companies to visit, struggling with parking difficulties. Tour operators, especially catering to travelers from China, India, and South Korea, are the primary influencers.”
During peak periods, up to 20,000 tourists inundate Bibury over weekends, accompanied by as many as 50 coaches daily, overwhelming the village’s 600 inhabitants.
The Gloucestershire County Council recently announced an investment of £175,000 in a project aimed at tackling ‘overtourism’ in Bibury, according to Punchline Gloucester.
Following consultations, the council is contemplating several strategies to manage tourism impact, including restricting coach access to the village. Last year, parking bays in central Bibury were closed, and new bus stop clearways were established to prevent hazardous coach maneuvers. After a successful trial period, permanent restrictions on coaches entering the area were enforced.
