A teenage girl in Brazil tragically lost her life due to an electric shock from her phone while it was charging. Beatriz Costa Diniz, aged 15, was discovered injured at her residence in Jutai by her father on January 15. The incident occurred as the phone was left connected to a wall outlet. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but her injuries necessitated specialized care, leading to her transfer to two other hospitals, one of which was three hours away, before she received intensive care.
Reports indicate that Beatriz was using her phone while it was plugged in, resulting in a severe electric shock causing her to collapse. She sustained second and third-degree burns and was hospitalized in Bragança under intensive care. Transport was arranged to move her to the Metropolitan Hospital in Greater Belém.
Despite undergoing necessary treatment, including surgery, Beatriz tragically passed away on January 19. The Scientific Police in Brazil confirmed her death and identified her on January 20, sparking grief in the local community of Augusto Corrêa, where she was well-regarded for her contributions to her family by selling tapioca flatbreads.
Following her death, Equatorial Pará, an energy concessionaire, investigated reports of network fluctuations but found no evidence of interruptions in the system. Although local media reported the incident as an electric shock, a social media page linked it to injuries from a mobile phone charger explosion.
Local authorities are investigating the circumstances as accidental, emphasizing the dangers of using a phone while it is charging, particularly with faulty or damaged chargers. Experts warn that faulty insulation in chargers can lead to fatal electric shocks, especially when handling devices near water or with wet hands.
