“Beware: Packing Error Could Lead to Financial Loss”

Date:

With Easter holidays approaching, many Brits are gearing up for travel, but experts caution against a common packing error that could lead to significant financial loss.

At bustling airports, a seemingly harmless item could become a tool for thieves to exploit and access your personal information and belongings.

According to Mike Harvey, the managing director of 1st Move International, it is risky to print full family names and home addresses on luggage tags due to potential security threats.

Harvey emphasized the importance of finding a balance between making your luggage identifiable and safeguarding personal information. Overly detailed luggage tags could expose travelers to identity theft, financial scams, and burglary.

Disclosing home addresses can signal to criminals that a property is unattended, while revealing passport numbers and insurance information could facilitate fraudulent activities.

Furthermore, providing information about valuable items on luggage tags may attract unwanted attention.

A recent report by Fox News highlighted a scam involving discarded bag tags being used to submit fraudulent reimbursement requests using owners’ personal information.

To prevent such incidents, Harvey recommended keeping luggage tags simple with essential contact details like names, phone numbers, and email addresses only.

He advised including the full name as per the passport, a phone number with the country code for quick communication, and an email address, preferably a separate travel email for correspondence.

Regarding disposable tags, it is recommended to keep them on belongings until they can be safely discarded at home.

Some individuals have suggested on Reddit alternative approaches, such as placing contact details inside the suitcase or using work addresses or family members’ residences on tags for safety.
