An ex-CIA operative has disclosed the concerning reality of how smartphones and similar devices can eavesdrop on conversations without users’ awareness. This issue has raised suspicions among individuals who have noticed the precise targeting of advertisements on their phones. The notion that our gadgets may be actively listening to us is no longer just a concept found in dystopian fiction.
John Kiriakou, a former CIA analyst and case officer turned whistleblower, was the initial CIA staff member to face charges for exposing the agency’s controversial enhanced interrogation program. In a recent discussion with podcast host Steven Bartlett, Kiriakou emphasized the need to be cautious about the covert surveillance techniques employed by global intelligence agencies. He highlighted how the CIA has the capability to intercept and monitor various forms of communication, stressing the pervasive nature of these surveillance practices.
During the conversation, the focus shifted to digital security, with Kiriakou underscoring the vulnerabilities of our tech devices. He cautioned against assuming that our devices are secure, as various entities, including not just the NSA/CIA/FBI but also other international actors, possess the means to compromise our technology.
Kiriakou further elaborated on the CIA’s capabilities, mentioning the infamous “Vault 7 Revelations” where a disgruntled CIA software engineer leaked top-secret documents to WikiLeaks. He detailed how the CIA can repurpose the speaker of a smart TV as a listening device, even when the device is turned off, enabling it to capture conversations in the room and transmit them back to the agency.
Moreover, he disclosed older technology used by intelligence agencies in the past, such as remotely manipulating a car’s computer system to cause fatal accidents. Kiriakou emphasized the widespread reach of surveillance capabilities, cautioning individuals to exercise vigilance in light of these sophisticated tactics.
As a former CIA employee involved in counterterrorism post-9/11, Kiriakou refused training in enhanced interrogation techniques. Subsequently, he faced legal repercussions for leaking classified information and was sentenced to a period of imprisonment. Following his release, he served time under home confinement.
