“Resurgence of Victorian-era Tuberculosis Sparks Concern”

Date:

A persistent cough and unexplained weight loss could indicate the presence of a contagious disease that was prevalent during the Victorian era, according to information provided on the NHS website. Recent data revealed a resurgence of tuberculosis, a historical superbug, with a notable increase in cases, jeopardizing its previous low-incidence status. Among those affected was four-year-old Elliot West, who exhibited symptoms such as night sweats and weight loss.

Elliot’s mother, Megan, shared their family’s ordeal to raise awareness about the disease. She emphasized the importance of recognizing the signs of tuberculosis, urging parents to be vigilant. The UK Health Security Agency reported a significant rise in tuberculosis cases in England, with a 13% increase from the previous year.

Tuberculosis primarily affects the lungs and can be effectively treated with antibiotics, but it can pose serious health risks if left untreated. The NHS recommends being attentive to gradual onset symptoms, including difficulty gaining weight, along with potential spread to other body parts like lymph nodes, bones, or the brain. In some cases, tuberculosis can be asymptomatic (latent) or present with noticeable symptoms (active).

In Elliot’s case, initial symptoms were misinterpreted as viral infections by doctors, attributing his condition to seeking attention. Megan, a dedicated stay-at-home mother, eventually sought medical help at Coventry Hospital when Elliot’s leg issues persisted. Subsequent tests revealed lymph nodes in his lungs, confirming a diagnosis of tuberculosis.
