Supermarkets in the UK are considering implementing “dynamic pricing,” a strategy that involves adjusting prices in real-time based on market demand and supply. This practice drew backlash from Oasis fans last year when ticket prices surged for the band’s comeback concerts.
According to a recent study by the Bank of England (BoE), electronic shelf labels, which can instantly update prices, could potentially facilitate dynamic pricing in the future. Some major UK supermarkets already utilize electronic shelf labels, including Co-op, Morrisons, and Waitrose.
Clare Lombardelli, deputy governor for monetary policy at the Bank of England, mentioned that certain sectors are exploring technology like electronic shelf labels for potential dynamic pricing implementation. However, the British Retail Consortium, representing over 200 major retailers, stated that there are currently no plans for supermarkets to adopt dynamic pricing.
Thomas Hill, co-founder at HyperFinity and former Asda pricing lead, emphasized that dynamic pricing is not imminent in the grocery sector to avoid negative consumer reactions. He explained that electronic shelf-edge labels are primarily aimed at cost-saving measures rather than implementing dynamic pricing strategies.
Despite grocery price inflation holding at 4.3% in March, it is projected to increase further. The Food and Drink Federation predicts that food inflation could exceed 9% by the end of 2026 due to rising energy costs, a significant factor in food production expenses.
Recently, Rachel Reeves and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband met with supermarket executives from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Aldi to discuss ways to alleviate consumer cost of living and strengthen supply chains. The government spokesperson indicated that collaborative efforts are underway to address these challenges.
