Donald Trump has commended the courageous British soldiers who served in Afghanistan, following his controversial statement about NATO soldiers avoiding frontline duties. The US president, in a post on Truth Social, lauded the British soldiers as some of the greatest warriors and honored the 457 members of the armed services who lost their lives or suffered severe injuries during the conflict.
In his message, Trump expressed unwavering support for the United Kingdom, emphasizing the strong bond between the two nations. He praised the UK Military for its exceptional dedication and highlighted the enduring alliance between the US and the UK.
This change in tone from Trump came after his remarks on Fox News questioning NATO’s reliability in times of need. He previously suggested doubts about NATO’s commitment, particularly during the Afghanistan conflict, accusing them of staying away from the frontlines.
Sir Keir Starmer criticized Trump’s comments as insulting and appalling, urging the US president to apologize. Starmer emphasized the bravery and sacrifices made by British soldiers, condemning Trump’s remarks for causing hurt to the families of the fallen and injured.
While acknowledging the importance of the UK-US relationship for national security, Starmer highlighted the shared values that led to joint efforts in Afghanistan. He underscored the significance of standing together with allies to defend freedom and uphold shared beliefs.
The Afghanistan conflict claimed the lives of 3,486 NATO troops over two decades, with 2,461 US service personnel among the casualties. Canada also mourned 165 deaths, including civilians, during this prolonged military engagement.
