Keir Starmer praised Angela Rayner in his address to Members of Parliament following her resignation. During a meeting with Labour MPs, the Prime Minister acknowledged the challenging week that Rayner had experienced, with several other MPs also commending her contributions.
In an effort to energize MPs after a tumultuous week, Starmer emphasized the need to advocate for change in the country, denouncing Reform UK as “plastic patriots.” He expressed appreciation for his new team following a significant reshuffle and thanked the entire Labour Party, including those who had left the frontbench, for their efforts over the past year.
Looking ahead to his upcoming Cabinet meeting with the revamped top team, Starmer highlighted the importance of growth in the next phase of government, focusing on effective delivery. He stressed the necessity of fighting for initiatives like building houses for future generations, improving transportation infrastructure, and ensuring every child reaches their full potential.
During the meeting, Starmer criticized politicians whose platforms are rooted in grievances, specifically mentioning Nigel Farage’s proposals for sanctions against the country that would adversely affect working people. He condemned the “Reform plastic patriots” and highlighted the need to combat detrimental policies from all sides, emphasizing the importance of progressive actions.
Additionally, Starmer reassured MPs that the Employment Rights Bill would proceed unchanged, addressing concerns raised by union leaders regarding potential amendments. He also discussed the urgency of addressing illegal Channel crossings, dismantling criminal networks, and closing asylum hotels to enhance community safety and prevent intimidation based on race.
A rapid six-week competition to select a new Labour Deputy Leader began, with MPs vying for nominations. The National Executive Committee (NEC) agreed to appoint a new deputy by 25 October during an emergency meeting.
