“James Bulger’s mother faces son’s killer in parole bid”

Date:

The mother of the murdered toddler James Bulger shared her concerns as the convicted killer Jon Venables is scheduled for a parole hearing. Venables, along with Robert Thompson, abducted and killed James in 1993 when they were only 10 years old, causing national shock. Despite being released in 2001, Venables was sent back to prison in 2010 and 2017 for possessing child abuse images. Now, he has another opportunity for parole.

Denise Fergus, the grieving mother, expressed her apprehensions about facing Venables during the parole hearing. She will participate in the hearing, where she will hear Venables’ voice through a video link due to his protected identity. Despite the emotional turmoil, Denise is determined to attend and make her presence known to her son’s killer.

The parole board granted Venables a fresh parole bid, indicating that he could potentially be released by the end of the year if approved. Denise, who has been preparing for this moment for over three decades, expressed her disappointment at the prospect of Venables’ potential release. She emphasized the psychological toll the uncertainty has taken on her, likening it to being imprisoned herself.

Both Thompson and Venables were released after serving less than eight years in a reoffenders institute, with Thompson not known to have reoffended. Venables, on the other hand, skipped his last parole hearing in 2023. The parole process involves a thorough review of evidence, including assessments of the original crime, behavior changes, and the impact on victims, to determine the risk posed by the prisoner’s release.

The Parole Board emphasizes that decisions are made with public safety as the top priority, considering a wide range of evidence and conducting extensive hearings to ensure a careful review process.
