The US President is set to launch a new website called Trump RX, aimed at providing discounts on prescription medicines. Unlike a typical online pharmacy, the website will serve as a guide, directing users to drug manufacturers’ websites where they can purchase medications.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed the upcoming unveiling of the website, describing it as a cutting-edge platform for American consumers to access affordable prescription drugs. President Donald Trump will introduce the site alongside Dr. Mehmet Oz from the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Joe Gebbia, the director of Trump’s National Design Studio.
Trump first mentioned TrumpRx in September while announcing initiatives to reduce drug prices to match those in other developed countries. He later stated that the website would offer significant discounts to consumers, although it remains unclear if the prices on manufacturers’ websites will consistently be lower than what insurance plans provide.
The launch of the website, initially scheduled for Thursday, has faced delays for undisclosed reasons. Last year, Dr. Oz assured Trump that the site would display prices for consumers before the year’s end, yet the release was postponed to late January.
In recent months, the president has emphasized his efforts to lower drug prices for Americans by negotiating deals with major pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Eli Lilly, and Merck. These agreements involve reducing prices for Medicaid drugs to match the pricing of “most favored nations” and offering new drugs at discounted rates through TrumpRx for consumer markets.
