The White House has declined to commit to keeping ICE agents away from polling locations during the upcoming midterm elections in November.
This decision follows remarks made by Steve Bannon, a former top advisor to Trump, who stated on his podcast that ICE would be present at polling stations in November. Additionally, Trump himself suggested that the federal government should intervene in the electoral process and potentially seize control of elections from state authorities.
During a recent White House press briefing, press secretary Karoline Leavitt was questioned about the possibility of deploying ICE agents to polling places in November. In response, she stated that she had not heard the President discuss such a plan and refused to assure the public that ICE agents would not be present at polling locations.
Leavitt expressed that she could not guarantee the absence of ICE agents at polling locations in November, referring to the question as hypothetical and unwarranted. She emphasized that there were no formal discussions about placing ICE agents near polling places by the President.
The responsibility for administering elections in most parts of the country, excluding Washington DC and certain overseas territories, lies with individual state governments or Congress. Despite criticism and concerns about potential constitutional breaches, Trump reiterated his stance on federal intervention in elections, claiming that states act as agents of the federal government in electoral matters, which is not accurate.
Trump emphasized the need for integrity in elections and suggested that if states fail to conduct fair elections, federal intervention may be necessary. While citing examples of alleged election corruption in Detroit, Pennsylvania, and Atlanta, Trump’s claims were refuted, as there was no substantial evidence of widespread misconduct in the 2020 elections.
When asked if he would accept the midterm election results, even in the event of significant losses for the Republican party, Trump insisted that he would do so only if the elections were conducted honestly and fairly.
