A Reform MP faced criticism for mistakenly voting in favor of removing the two-child benefit cap, a move that could potentially lift around 450,000 children out of poverty. Robert Jenrick and Suella Braverman, who recently switched allegiance, sided with Labour MPs in the crucial vote, causing confusion.
During an interview with Sky News host Sophy Ridge, Jenrick was questioned about his understanding of Reform’s policy. Despite the mix-up, Jenrick clarified that Reform’s stance is clear and denied being confused. He emphasized his party’s position, which aligns with ensuring benefit payments for more than two children are limited to working British families.
The incident stirred debate as Reform’s position seemed to shift, with Nigel Farage initially supporting the removal of the benefit cap but later revising the policy to apply only to families where both parents are British and employed full-time. This change led to conflicting votes within the Reform party, prompting criticism from Labour minister Torsten Bell.
Notably, Nigel Farage did not cast a vote, while the remaining Reform MPs opposed the government’s legislation. A Reform spokesperson attributed the confusion to a genuine mistake in choosing the voting lobby. This episode highlighted the complexities and challenges of parliamentary procedures, as even experienced politicians like Jenrick can inadvertently find themselves in the wrong voting booth.
