A mother accused of tossing her four-year-old son into a lake and walking away as he drowned has been declared mentally fit to face trial.
Ruth Miller, celebrating her 40th birthday at Atwood Lake in Ohio with her family, allegedly claimed she entrusted her son, Vincen, and husband, Marcus, to God as a test of faith. Tragically, both father and son were found dead the following day.
Miller has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the murder charges. The prosecution emphasized that the case is not about identifying the perpetrator but understanding the motive behind the tragic incident.
Concerns were raised about Miller’s mental state prior to the incident due to her heightened spiritual beliefs about an impending end of the world. Despite efforts by her Amish community to encourage mental health support, she never indicated any intention to harm herself or others.
On the night of the lake trip, Miller claimed she and her husband were awakened by a divine message to walk on water. After an unsuccessful attempt, Marcus went back into the water alone, prompting Miller to follow with Vincen.
During the court hearing, Miller reportedly stated that she believed God instructed her to sacrifice Vincen. After the act, she allegedly heard a voice questioning her continued search for Vincen since she had already entrusted him to God.
The trial is scheduled to proceed later this year.
