The trade involves bones and tissues, often fashioned into jewelry and furniture, being marketed on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and eBay without buyers knowing their origins.
Reports have surfaced of disturbing incidents, including an offer for a six-year-old child’s skull to collectors and a human skeleton dressed as a vampire in a fake coffin. Dr. Trish Biers from the Trading and Sale of Human Remains Taskforce revealed that a significant number of body parts are traded annually in the UK, with some falsely labeled as antiques and sold at collector events and horror exhibitions.
Labor Party representative Bell Ribeiro-Addy recently alerted lawmakers to the sale of items like necklaces and candlesticks made from human remains on various online platforms. Dr. Biers emphasized the lack of accountability in tracking human remains compared to other items, with sellers deceptively claiming ethical sourcing while exploiting donated bodies for profit.
The experts highlighted the unethical nature of the trade, noting that remains used for medical research should never be sold for commercial gain. Dr. Lauren McIntyre highlighted the association of this trade with an increase in church and graveyard vandalism, posing risks to heritage sites and public health due to potential exposure to hazardous substances from antiquated remains.
Efforts are being made to address this issue, with calls for legislation to ban the sale of human remains altogether. Companies like Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, have implemented strict regulations to prevent such transactions, while eBay prohibits the sale of human body parts on its platform and actively monitors listings to ensure compliance with policies.
