Factory worker has hand surgically attached to hip after injury

Date:

A man working at a factory recounts a harrowing incident where his hand was severely injured and had to be surgically attached to his hip for preservation. Kyle Mazur, an operator at a boxing plant, underwent multiple surgeries and intensive therapy after losing two fingers in the accident. His hand was degloved, leading to the removal of fingers and skin grafting procedures. Initially in disbelief, Kyle eventually opted to have his hand sewn to his hip to maintain blood flow and preserve the bone structure.

His wife, Kirstyn, a home care nurse, supported his decision to keep his hand despite medical recommendations to amputate it. Dr. Lin, a hand specialist in Philadelphia, devised the method of attaching Kyle’s hand to his hip. Despite facing challenges post-accident, including scarring from skin grafts and nerve damage, Kyle has adapted to his new reality. He has learned to perform tasks with one hand, utilizing special tools for daily activities.

While initially self-conscious about his hand, Kyle now embraces his situation as motivation for self-improvement. He remains grateful for retaining his hand and aims to inspire others with disabilities by showcasing his abilities in sports like baseball and skateboarding. Kyle, who received compensation from his workplace, envisions using his experience to assist others facing similar challenges. He encourages individuals to see beyond setbacks and believes in the potential for a fulfilling life post-injury.
