“England Cricket Legend’s Son Finds Comfort in Gareth Southgate’s Message”

Date:

The son of the renowned England cricket figure Graham Thorpe has shared a story about a supportive message he received from his ‘hero’ Gareth Southgate following his father’s tragic passing in 2024. Thorpe, who died at the age of 55, had struggled after losing his position as assistant coach for the England cricket team two years earlier. His son, Henry, recently disclosed the difficulty he faced in accepting his father’s death.

During an interview with The Telegraph, Henry revealed that he only learned the full details of his father’s death six months later, expressing how he went through a dark period thereafter. He recounted a touching moment when Gareth Southgate’s message provided him with much-needed comfort during a challenging time.

Describing the encounter, Henry shared, “Gareth was present at my dad’s event at the Oval last summer. It was a tough day for me, and I felt the urge to speak with him but couldn’t find the right moment. Feeling on edge, I later messaged him on LinkedIn, not expecting a response. To my surprise, he replied with a heartfelt email, offering support and connecting me with others who have been a source of strength.”

Following his father’s death, Henry made the decision to leave his job at M&C Saatchi Merlin. Despite the emotional impact of the loss, he gained a new perspective on his father’s career and achievements.

Reflecting on his father’s legacy, Henry added, “Losing a parent, especially in such circumstances, brings about a mix of emotions one can never truly prepare for. It has been a journey of introspection, navigating through feelings of anger, sadness, and pride in my father’s legacy.”

Graham Thorpe, who represented England from 1993 to 2005, boasted an impressive record of 16 test centuries during his tenure. Following his playing career, he ventured into coaching and was set to lead Afghanistan before falling ill.
