Labour’s Deputy leader, Lucy Powell, urges voters to support the Labour party in the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election to prevent Reform from gaining ground. Powell criticized Nigel Farage as a disingenuous figure who contradicts the interests of the working class. The crucial by-election on Thursday will see Reform’s Matt Goodwin, supported by far-right campaigner Tommy Robinson, competing against Labour’s Angeliki Stogia and the Green Party.
Powell emphasized the importance of trusting Labour, highlighting Farage’s unfulfilled promises during the Brexit campaign. Referring to the Oasis song “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” Powell stressed the need to avoid regret by backing Labour against Reform.
In a scathing attack on Farage, Powell labeled him as a fake and a charlatan who does not support working-class communities. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband condemned Goodwin’s comments about Britishness, calling them disgraceful and a personal attack on his family. Miliband emphasized the inclusive nature of British identity and criticized Goodwin for implying that only those born in the UK can be considered British.
Stogia, speaking on the bus, criticized the Green Party for offering unrealistic promises that they cannot deliver, warning that supporting them would indirectly benefit Reform.
The campaign bus, adorned with messages highlighting Labour’s stance against Reform, serves as a backdrop for the party’s final push to secure victory in the upcoming election.
