“Instagram Introduces Alerts for Teen Suicide Searches”

Date:

Instagram has announced that parents will receive notifications if their teenagers repeatedly search for terms related to suicide or self-harm. This update is part of Instagram’s efforts to enhance safety for teens under 16 by introducing Teen Accounts, which restrict contacts and content exposure.

The new feature will alert parents when their teens utilize a new supervision tool, notifying them of any concerning search activity related to suicide or self-harm. These notifications aim to keep parents informed if their child is persistently seeking harmful content.

In addition to alerts, Instagram will provide parents with guidance on how to support their teens and approach sensitive discussions. Notifications will be sent via email, text, WhatsApp, and in-app messages, reaching parents using Instagram’s parental supervision tools in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada initially, with expansion to other regions later this year.

Meanwhile, the UK government is intensifying efforts to address online harms, especially concerning children’s exposure to harmful content. Despite existing regulations, advocates emphasize the need for further action to ensure a safer online environment for children.

The government will launch a consultation on children’s digital wellbeing, seeking input from parents and children for immediate solutions. The consultation aims to address issues such as social media bans and restrictions on addictive apps to enhance online safety for kids. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall and Keir Starmer have committed to swift action to protect young people from the negative impacts of social media.

Andy Burrows, CEO of the Molly Rose Foundation, expressed concerns about the effectiveness of Instagram’s notifications, highlighting the importance of addressing the root cause of harmful content recommendations rather than burdening parents with additional responsibilities.
