Jeremy Corbyn has been elected as the leader of the newly formed left-wing Your Party. The election took place for four public office positions on the party’s executive committee, following a contentious founding process marked by internal disputes and legal challenges.
Zarah Sultana, a former Labour MP who initially boycotted the party’s inaugural conference, also secured a position on the committee. The party’s decision to have a 24-member central executive committee instead of a single leader was supported by its members.
Results announced on Thursday revealed that Corbyn’s group, ‘The Many,’ won 14 out of the 24 positions, surpassing Sultana’s supporters who secured seven seats. Consequently, Corbyn is expected to be appointed as the parliamentary leader of Your Party, signaling a move towards unity after internal conflicts during its establishment.
Additionally, Laura Smith, a former Labour MP who previously served on Corbyn’s shadow front bench, was elected as one of the four public office holders. The election saw a 61% voter turnout, with 25,347 out of 40,985 verified members participating.
Corbyn expressed his readiness to begin work, emphasizing the need for swift action. He highlighted the importance of collaboration within Your Party to realize a progressive vision for the UK, following his supporters’ successful bid for control of the party’s leadership committee.
In a statement, Corbyn underscored the party’s commitment to challenging prevailing ideologies, stating that unity and a shared mission of social justice and peace were crucial to overcoming adversities. He called for solidarity in addressing societal issues and building a more compassionate and equitable world for all individuals.
