US Missile Defense Expert Warns of Inefficiency

Date:

US missile defense expert Annie Jacobsen has raised concerns about the inefficiency of American interceptor missiles designed to thwart nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). In her book “Nuclear War: A Scenario,” Jacobsen paints a grim picture of a hypothetical North Korean preemptive strike on the US leading to a catastrophic nuclear conflict with billions of casualties.

Amidst escalating tensions due to US and Israeli military actions against Iran, Jacobsen has emphasized the daunting obstacles in effectively intercepting missiles in the US. During a podcast interview with Brad Carr, she bluntly admitted that the US lacks the capability to shoot down or “hack” incoming missiles due to the inadequacy of the interceptor missile system, comprising only 44 missiles.

Comparing the US system to Russia’s arsenal of 1,670 nuclear warheads, Jacobsen underscored the stark imbalance in firepower and the questionable efficacy of the American interceptor missiles. She highlighted the deployment of 44 Ground-Based Interceptors (GBIs) in Fort Greely, Alaska, and Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, in contrast to Russia’s 68 nuclear-tipped GBIs, as reported by Defense News.

Jacobsen outlined the immense challenges involved in intercepting an ICBM, noting the incredible speeds at which these missiles travel and the lack of sophistication in the interceptors. She described the interceptors as essentially having a kinetic impactor akin to a “bowling ball,” lacking explosives and relying on sheer force to collide with the target warhead.

Citing insights from the US Missile Defense Agency, Jacobsen likened the interception process to “hitting a bullet with a bullet” and revealed an alarming failure rate that has led to the program being put on hold. Despite possessing 44 interceptor missiles, Jacobs claimed that the US is not pursuing further development of the system due to its perceived ineffectiveness.

In conclusion, Jacobsen’s assessment of the US missile defense capabilities underscores the significant challenges and limitations in countering potential nuclear threats, raising concerns about the efficacy and reliability of the current interceptor missile system.
